Existential Crisis – Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve

5

Have you ever questioned life and your existence so hard that you wish it would be over already? Because why? Why does anything happen, what is the point of doing anything yet the end is inevitable? Have you ever wondered who you are that you get stuck in your head for hours on end trying to figure yourself out? “I’m a million different people from one day to the next” is a line in the lyrics to the song Bitter Sweet Symphony that resonates with how we can define ourselves. We morph with each step we take and the opinions and thoughts we hold today might change tomorrow in the situations that we find ourselves. We can become very many different versions of ourselves for as long as we live.

Listening to the song, Bitter Sweet Symphony gives me a nostalgic feeling, back to a time when I felt the depth of the lyrics but couldn’t make out what it actually meant. Overtime the lyrics have become more relatable and thought provoking. I might not have the exact thoughts as the writer of the lyrics but it takes me to a place in my head that can at least try to relate to him.

Growing up, life had a definite explanation to it. We knew what it was about and barely needed to ask questions. It was simple, be respectful, be smart and work hard. And when you do these, you are sure to get the reward of a good life. What none of us asked was why. Why we had to have the good life. Why and yet our existence is transient. After all, no one cares right?

“Try to make ends meet, try to make some money then you die”. Some will have it easy, for some it will take more than necessary and others will never be able to make it in this life. Yet, the question still remains, why? Perhaps it isn’t for us, but for the people who will come after. Grandiosity is naturally in us as humans and it would make us happy that the people who are going to enjoy our struggles will appreciate us. Will they though? Will they even remember us? And if they do and we are gone, what good is it to us when we can’t feel it?

Sometimes we wake up excited, ready to take on life, having these questions way in the back of our mind, enjoying life, laughs, art, music and love. The sweet parts of life. Only, those moments don’t last forever. Sometimes they are too brief that we barely remember that there was a time in our lives that we could afford a smile. Other times we are too beaten down that even getting out of bed seems like a task, because we don’t understand why we have to do anything and that’s just the way it is.

What is life? A bittersweet symphony!
