Pretty Unpretty

Differently beautiful, beautiful on the inside are the words that are said when we do not exactly fit into the world’s standard of beauty. However much we want to sugarcoat it, the word is unpretty or ugly. Let us face it, saying “ugly’” will only be offensive if someone considers him/ herself that but trying to hide in the shadow of “inner beauty.”

Love and Boy bands – Music Highlights of the 90s

Whether we like it or not, at some point in our lives we find ourselves having deep emotions for human companionship. In simpler terms, we fall in love, yeah, I don’t know why the thought of it sounds funny to me. However, just like everyone else I have been caught up in such moments a couple of times. As a music enthusiast, I go through all my emotions through music, including such kind. In my opinion no music best describe love better than Rhythm and blues of the 90s. My playlist for the moments that I am high on love take me back to the 90s. This playlist is lyrically inclined to the boy bands that hit the scene of music in the 90s some of my favorite songs from these boy bands being;

Death and Grief

None is spared from the inevitable cold kiss off death. However, nothing takes us aback as the news of the demise of somebody we knew. One because we refer them in past tense and second because it is unbelievable that you will no longer hear the sound of their voices, see the smile in their faces or enjoy a warm embrace from them. From this time on they are literally cold until they are down to nothing.

Is the understanding of feminism subjective? Lyrics about women empowerment

With the rise and sensitization of women empowerment and their rights around the world, I feel like the term feminism has been hugely misunderstood. The mention of the term has become very uncomfortable for many people. To men, it seems like the women are out here to fight them and take their places in the society while on the other hand women have neglected their natural born gifts to out seat the men and take their place. Again, I insist, gender equality is equal opportunity for everyone to do what feels best in their hearts and minds. Women are powerful and strong in their own right. And so are men, but for this article I will talk about lyrics that remind women of their empowerment.

Stockholm Syndrome hit home – Love on the brain by Rihanna

Suddenly, you lost your mind. You don’t know who you are any more. Even your actions are no longer familiar to you. It is something that you have seen in a movie or read in a book. Not in a million years could you imagine that you would end up like this. They call it love but what’s love got to do with it? You can only try to figure where you fall in the spectrum of insanity because, what the hell is this anyway?

Dear Men, you are appreciated

Men are not appreciated enough. The world has too many demands from them. Unspoken rules and responsibilities yet, take no time to thank them for the roles they play in our lives. They fight and defend, show strength even at their weakest and take in the ungratefulness that the world gives to them in return. A man compared to others would easily be suspected of being a crook even when he hasn’t done anything. It is a stereotype that the first suspect to any crime would be a man. Willing to sacrifice their lives to save others. Men offer themselves on the frontlines of disasters to help. In case of any disaster even when they do not know the people involved, they would put their lives at risk in trying to offer help. They rarely show their emotions because they are taught from a young age that showing emotions is a sign of weakness. They hold in their troubles until they cannot do it anymore, which ends in tragedy. These demands bring out the worst in men.

Social justice in lyrics

The right to swing your fist ends where another person’s nose begins. This statement is both metaphorically and literally true. Whatever you do, make sure it does not affect anybody else and that is the unspoken natural law. One other reason to love music is for the social issues and human rights awareness that is well discussed in the lyrical artistry. Lyrics are more than just entertainment as the lyricists can pass important and sensitive messages through their music. The good thing about these lyrics is that they traverse all genres of music. There are people who stick to a favorite genre for a lifetime and in spite of their limited music taste, they never miss the chance to learn from the lyrics from their genre of choice.
