Masked – Run to you by Whitney Houston

Allan Rich and Jud Friedman created a lyrical gem in the song “Run to you.” However, Whitney Houston’s voice is what evokes the kind of inexplicable emotions that we are unable to express in simple words. As it is know, where words cannot, music steps in. The lyrics to this song resonate with most people who have trust issues based on past hurts. They are feeling broken inside and admitting to unstable emotions and loneliness but unsure if they could get the relief they desire from their loved ones. So, all they are seeking is a little patience to be understood.

We are okay, we are in control, or at least that’s the mask we wear for everyone else to see. Most of us feel like people around us to do understand our deepest feelings and emotions. We don’t believe that they could relate to what we are going through or even do something about it. Probably because we think that they are too busy going around with their own lives to get deep with us, so naturally we would only show our strength to the world but deep down we feel the blues. The lyrics to this song express how we would love people to see more than our bright faces and look deep within us to understand the difficulties we might be facing. This is expressed in the opening line of the song, “I know that when you look at me, there’s so much that you just don’t see, But if you would only take the time, I know in my heart you’d find, A girl who’s scared sometimes, Who isn’t always strong, Can’t you see the hurt in me?” Admittedly, we are feeling lonely and we need help from people we hope care about us to get us over our fears and sadness.

From the line, “I need you here to wipe away my tears, To kiss away my fears, no If you only knew how much” we know that there’s comfort and peace in being by ourselves, but there’s just enough that we can handle on our own. No man is an island and sometimes we need people who will step in whenever we have had too much to bear. It gets sad and lonely when after faking a smile throughout the day we come home and there’s nobody to talk to. No one to tell how we have been, the struggles we went through during the day, a hug to comfort us and tell us that everything is going to be fine. To wipe away our tears. It doesn’t have to be a lover’s hug. Just a hug from somebody who cares.

We all have hopes and dreams that we work so hard to achieve. We wouldn’t let anyone or anything disrupt us from the path to our goals. We even convince ourselves that when we are alone, we have a higher chance of achievement and when we get to that point when we are at the pinnacle of success, “What’s the sense of trying hard to find your dreams, Without someone to share it with?”

As the song comes to an end, we relate to it in such a way that we are unsure that the result we expect is positive. Are they going to accept us as we are or will they runaway?
